Side Effects of Anxiety Medication

It is believed that anxiety medications can  cure depression and anxiety disorders . However, this is not completely true. Anxiety drugs have grave side effects that can hamper the health and well-being of an individual. For more on this, read on…

The kinds of lifestyle followed in recent times are a far cry from the peaceful and contented life led, few decades ago. The fast life of today has dragged us into an endless rat race that forces us to battle stress and anxiety in every walk of life. Recent years have witnessed a striking rise in the number of individuals suffering from anxiety disorders and depression. Perhaps, the root cause of anxiety is the fast pace of life, which has taken away our peace of mind.

True, medicines can alleviate your suffering to a certain extent. But their side effects and their long-term consequences on the overall health of an individual cannot be ignored. In fact, overuse of anxiety medications should be strictly avoided. Considering the fact that they impact general health and have certain negative side effects, it is better to stay away from them. Let us take a look at the side effects of anxiety medications.

Anxiety Medication – Side Effects

Some of the commonly observed side effects of anxiety medications are nausea, headache and dizziness. Certain anti-anxiety drugs result in weakness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, excessive sweating and nervousness while others may cause excessive increase in weight. Some anxiety medications can also lead to a disturbed sexual life as a result of impotence and sexual dysfunction. Blurred vision and skin rashes are some of the other common side effects of anti-anxiety drugs. Jaundice, fever, stiff muscles and loss of consciousness are some of the serious side effects.

Benzodiazepines that are prescribed for anxiety disorders and panic attacks can cause certain personality changes in individuals consuming them. Increased aggressiveness and violent behavior in some and depression accompanied by suicidal thoughts in others are some of the symptoms observed in patients using this drug treatment.

what do you do for anxiety attacks

With an increase in the number of individuals suffering from anxiety and stress-related disorders, there has been a rise in the use of antidepressant drugs and anxiety medications. Azaspirones, which are used for treating generalized anxiety disorders, are known to have severe side effects on pregnant women and patients of renal disorders. Certain antidepressants and anxiety drugs are known to cause hallucinations and nightmares. Sleeping disorders like nightmares are some of the other commonly cited side effects of anxiety medications.

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors that are administered for treating panic disorders can cause mild nausea, headache, sleeping disorders, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems. However, they cause fewer side effects than other antidepressants and anxiety medications. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, the oldest form of antidepressants, interact with certain foods and beverages and cause elevation in blood pressure, and more life-threatening side effects.

Perhaps the most dangerous side effect of anxiety medications is the risk of addiction. In many cases, individuals who consume antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs over a long duration become addicted to these medications, making it difficult for them to leave these drugs even after their addiction treatment ends.

Considering the gravity of the side effects of anxiety medications, it is best to recover from anxiety disorders  through cognitive and behavioral procedures. In some cases, counseling can provide a solution to stress and anxiety disorders. Some of you might find a cure in holistic medicine. In my view, self-help is the best help.

The fear and terror that a person experiences during a panic attack are not in proportion to the true situation and may be unrelated to what is happening around them.
